Julie Smith – meet the Board member

How long have you been on the Board?

I have been on the board since 2016

Why did you join?

I joined as I think working strategically in the area is really important. We need to make sure all organisations and sectors can work together to create a thriving Muirhouse. Not one organisation or sector has the answer, and the better relationships we have between each other and ourselves and the community the better for all.
As a community development worker for over 20 years I am used to taking a bottom up as opposed to a top down approach and think this skill and my experience can help support the broader work of MHA.

What is the best thing about being on the Board?

The best thing about being on the board is being surrounded by very knowledgeable people! From the tenants, to other members, to the staff, I feel I am learning so much. Housing is a massive issue in the area and if in however small a way, being a board member at MHA can help people access good quality affordable homes, I’m happy.

What is the most difficult thing about being on the Board?

The most difficult thing is seeing the need in the area and knowing it takes so long to change things. It can be difficult to keep up with what’s happening. There are lots of regulations governing RSLs and getting your head round them is new. And the massive numbers in Barry’s accounts hurt my head.

Why would you recommend joining the Board?

I would recommend joining the board, but I do think it’s important that the tenants’ voice is the one we hear loud and clear at board meetings.
