Can you make a difference to Muirhouse and the local community in North Edinburgh?

Muirhouse Housing Association, located in North Edinburgh, is seeking passionate and enthusiastic individuals to join our Board.  As a Board Member you can help our organisation move to the next exciting stage of our development.  We are an independent charity, although we have Partners in North Edinburgh who work closely with us.  Our Partners are also committed to making a positive impact in our community.  Board membership would offer an individual development opportunity for someone who shares our values and is looking to play a leading role in the organisation and community.

Muirhouse Housing Association (MHA) is based in North Edinburgh.  For almost 30 years we have played a crucial role in the regeneration of the centre of Muirhouse.  The association has 506 social rent properties and 60 mid-market rent properties.  These properties are all situated within our communities.  We focus on Improving these homes through Investment and delivering excellent services to those who live within them.

Moving forward

We recently concluded a strategic option appraisal.  This confirmed our key role as an independent local charity with a strong focus on developing and creating effective partnerships with others in the North of Edinburgh.  Edinburgh is one of the fastest growing and most prosperous populations in Scotland although it also unfortunately experiences large inequalities.  Muirhouse has a greater concentration of poverty than some other areas in the city but there is significant regeneration investment underway at Pennywell.  Planning is also underway for large-scale growth at Granton Waterfront – a new ‘coastal town’ for Edinburgh.  Our newly appointed Chief Executive is Susan Bell.  Susan is excited to take the Association forward to meet the changing needs of our tenants, while encouraging a new phase of MHA’s development. This includes connecting Muirhouse tenants to the economic and social opportunities that should come through this wider long-term growth.

Do you have the knowledge and expertise to help us?

To further strengthen our Board and help move the organisation forward, we need to add new members: those who bring different viewpoints; have different lived experiences; hold strong community values; and have a desire to make a difference.  This is extremely important to us around our Board Table. We want diversity on our Board. Therefore, we would welcome applications from people from a whole range of backgrounds and experiences including the following:

  • Finance/Accountancy expertise
  • Property Management, including Construction and Architecture etc..,
  • MHA tenants and others’ living locally
  • People with the community of Muirhouse at heart
  • People developing their career and wishing to widen their knowledge and experience
  • Experience within a housing or housing related organisation, Governance, Leadership and senior-level experience
  • Business planning, strategy development and change management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Working or volunteering within the charitable and/or third sector

The Board generally meet every 6-8 weeks, and there are occasional sub-committee meetings. Time requirements for board members may vary on a month-to-month basis.  On average, we estimate that we would need around 10 hours from you to fulfil this voluntary role.  We take a hybrid approach to meetings, with options for meeting online or in person.  If you are interested in the role, and would like an informal discussion, please contact Susan Bell, Chief Executive at Susan Bell sbell@muirhouseha.org.uk.  The Board Member Role Description and Board Member Application Form, as well as information on how we use your information, can be found below:
